Leap Day Dinner Party

WHAT: Roommates have a holiday gathering, which unfortunately is the same day the Society has turned all of them human.
WARNINGS: Food, alcohol, questionable theming.

LEAP DAY DINNER PARTY

Velvet spent an entire week preparing this dinner party between roommates(-in-law), and they will not be cancelling just because of the human body hell situation. The catered dishes have been magically transported to her and Adzuki's apartment, and the entire evening is reserved for getting to know each other. No one is allowed to leave early. 😈

The dinner table, decked with a red velvet tablecloth, is lit with tall candles and adorned with roses. Anatolia has been provided with a special high chair and a goose-appropriate kid's menu.

As they're celebrating the leap year, Velvet attempted a compromise between her usual gothic vampire aesthetics and appropriate holiday theming. (She doesn't immediately explain that it's themed—at what point do you catch on?)

Charcuterie: Dark fruits, decadent sausages, red beet chips, charcoal crackers, with a wheel of brie topped with blood orange syrup.

Appetizer: Cuisses de grenouille à la provençale, which the French will recognize as frog legs fried with butter, garlic and parsley.

Soup: Light rabbit stew with white wine and mushrooms.

Salad: Red kale with blackberries, pumpkin seeds, feta, and a blackberry shallot vinaigrette.

Main Course: Miso-ginger glazed salmon on white rice.

Dessert: Cricket macarons, made from cricket flour and garnished with gold-painted crickets.

Wine: Irresponsibly copious, given that none of them have supernatural constitutions anymore. Both red and white are available.

Welcome to Adzuki and Velvet's gothic vampire castle apartment! Yes, it always looks like this.

Ok, so the human thing is a LITTLE weird and kind of disconcerting, but Adzuki is so excited about their fancy family dinner party that any concerns about it are mostly gone. Because she wanted to get dressed up she borrowed some clothes from Velvet that look awesome but are completely not her style. She is practically vibrating with excitement.

She also has presents, as promised:
For Cyprien: The Sound of the Mountain, which is honestly kind of a weird book to give him. She's never read it, but her father did!
For Adrian: A custom mug that Darcy helped her design. She only sort of understands the implications of the word 'daddy.'
For Velvet: A nice little sword polishing kit! She even watched a bunch of videos online on how to use it so she can show Velvet.

"Oh darling, you shouldn't have!" Velvet seems genuinely touched by the gesture, and demands that the boys go off to do something else for a bit so Adzuki can explain every piece of the kit, or they can go to the loveseat to watch a video together.

This is a lovely book! Cyprien hasn't read it before and he almost goes and sits alone to read it exactly right now, but decides that's poor dinner manners and just thanks her very much instead!

Cyprien never actually expected to engage in the "food" and "drinking" part of these evening and would've of course been happy to show up hovering around everyone else's salad plates. He doesn't have to and is thrilled about that, actually. He's in a leather jacket of Adrian's which is not exactly his normal style, but he does look like he perhaps at least belongs in this century. He's in a great mood, greeting everyone with the very French double double kiss kiss cheek thing and making himself at home, draping over furniture like he might've in any fashionable salon back in the day.

Velvet is the picture of calm competence, only because she's been trained to never show weakness. (Mention the makeup-concealed zit on her chin at your own peril.) She had the amusing idea to wear like a vampire fifties housewife for this gathering, but the human curse has thoroughly rattled her and she opts for a more armoured up look instead. Hello, darling! Thank you so much for coming! Please don't ever ask her if she's okay!

She does relax as the evening goes on, mostly thanks to the wine but also because she realizes everyone here is genuine about wanting to be friends? Maybe?

For any scenes taking place during the dinner party. Or after? Do whatever.

After dinner, the charcuterie board is returned to the table and more bottles of wine are opened as Velvet proposes a game of Truth or Shot.

Alright, you can't really take shots when all you have are wine glasses, but you know what she really means, don't you? Drink this extremely expensive wine like it's a punishment.

A simple first question, for their host: "Why swords?"

"What's your faaaaavorite thing about me?" Adzuki takes a drink as she asks this, which is not how the game is played.

Let's start off with something easy. "What would you have named Anatolia if she turned out to be a gander instead?"

He is officially tipsy enough to ask a slightly more difficult question; "If your egg had hatched to be a monster, what would you have done?"

He does reach over to cover Anatolia's goose ears with his hands so as not to build mistrust in her father.

"What's your favorite thing about Cyprien?? Is it his hair?" Adzuki thinks he has fancy hair.

"Which body is better to be in? Yours, or Adrian's?"

Cyprien thinks about this, rotating the hand not holding a wine glass, still marveling at the feeling of being able to move it, being inside it again. "There is, as they say, no place like home." He declares, wistful. And then to throw a kind bone: "But I felt healthier in Adrian's body, I think, so he must take better care."

Adzuki leans in very seriously. "What's your most favoritest thing about Adrian?"

Has never played this before, is maybe going to die, it's fine.

"Do you have nine lives?"

Adzuki ponders this, staring up at the ceiling as though it has some answers for her. "I think I only have one, BUT it's like super long so maybe if you added it all up it'd be nine."

"Did you ever have a home, where you were a pet, as a cat?" (He does not know how this works exactly, and is perhaps suffering still from guilt of keeping a mythical creature as also a pet, but that's context no one needs to know.)

Adzuki is very excited to answer this question and is very animated as she explains, "Yes! I was just a regular cat for like, fifteen years, so I lived with my dad and I was just a cat and it was AWESOME, and then my tails split and I ended up like this but I didn't want to leave even though the OTHER nekomata in the mountains were like: hey Adzuki, come live in the mountains! But I was like: NO I love my dad I'm going to stay here and keep being a cat so I did, but then he got old so his kids moved him here so that's why I live here." She drinks throughout this chatter, and is clearly tipsy even at the start.
