ORACLE

Sometime overnight, a 1980s-style arcade game console appeared in the Atrium. It seems to have come out of the Archives, though no one takes immediate credit for its appearance.

For those brave enough to try, the game asks a few simple questions, then promises to tell your future. One quarter per play.

Asher refuses to play the game, but can be seen in the Atrium several times throughout the day, eyeing the Oracle warily.

Maya arrives sometime in the afternoon. She looks between the console and the way Asher is staring at it. She asks, "Do you like video games?"

"Sure, I liked video games. I was once an American male child." He's still watching the console. "But that's not a video game."

Maya looked between the console, which very much looked like a video game, and him. "Okay. Then, what is it?"

"Here's my best witch advice," he says, turning to face her instead of the game. "Don't let fortune telling tempt you."

"That's your best witch advice?" Maya raised her eyebrows. "I can't say that I have ever been one to believe in fortune telling outside of making people figure out what they really want."

Asher shook his head tightly. "No, it's definitely real. Sure, there are hacks, but it's not worth the risk."

"So, you believe in it but you just think it's too... dangerous to hear?" She considers Asher. "Why?"

"Absolutely. When I said I didn't read horoscopes, it's not because I think they're fake," he says. He'd let it play like he was above it all, but in truth, it all unnerved him. "I've known a few folks who are the real thing, and that stuff can set you on bad paths."

Maya considered this and she supposed along with everything else it made sense that the supernatural world had real fortunes. "A mystery fortune telling machine does seem like you're just asking to get jumanji-ed."

"Thank you, yes." Asher nods vigorously. "People have been playing it all day! Like nothing would go wrong."

Maya ran her hand up and down his arm, to give him some sense of comfort. "Hopefully the fortunes have been mild."

A skeptical sound escapes him. "Sure, maybe. Wait, you didn't play, did you?" It's not an alarmed question, more of a check he's not offending her after the fact.

She shook her head. "No, I haven't been tempted yet. Would have been rude of me to let you go on that long without telling you that I already had. No fortunes for me."

"Good," he says. He gestures toward the game. "That one may be bullshit, but, you know, why risk it?"
